Visualization Techniques
There are two visualization techniques used in sports that can improve a player’s performance during a game. When a player thinks about their upcoming game, many thoughts will run through their mind that are either positive thoughts or negative thoughts. Depending on the way a player has been playing, these thoughts are often imbalanced with negative thought winning in the end. While running worst case scenarios is one strategy taught to players, it is not the only one. Focusing on positive thoughts can also help improve one’s performance.
External visualization involves a player creating a scenario in their head. The player must be relaxed and allow the mind to create detailed information about the players in this scenario. They must visualize the strengths these imaginary players will bring to the game. The player observes how the scenario is played out with the outcome being a positive one. In this type of visualization, the player is an observer of imaginary players at their best during a game.
Internal visualization is similar to external visualization except that the player is not the observer, but rather one of the players. The player will imagine themselves in a scenario and use their best skills to win the game. Players should relax their bodies and be willing to create a scenario in their heads. This will take some practice, but after awhile it will become easier. While internal visualization relies on remembering smells and physical feeling of previous games, external visualization relies on visual reconstruction. When players are able to use both techniques, they will be able to improve their attitude when going into a game.
Both techniques should be taught to players separately and eventually be used together to create one experience that is positive and will reinforce a player’s self-esteem and self-awareness. Studies have shown that players who practice these exercises before a game tend to be more relaxed and prepared for anything that might happen during the game. Players will try to do their best because they envisioned themselves doing their best by utilizing both internal and external visualization techniques before every game. Goalkeeper Mental Training
