THE ROLE OF THE SOCCER GOALKEEPER

The role of the goalkeeper is an important one. Keeping the goal safe by blocking the ball every time an attempt is made is their job. The goalkeeper can use their hands, feet, or body to defend the goal. But many goalkeepers are not properly trained to perform their role as effectively as they can. Many times, the goalkeeper receives little training. They learn how to play other positions, but when it comes to being trained on how to defend the goal, many goalkeepers learn on their own.

Recently, many soccer camps have decided to start training player how to effectively guard the goal. This involves properly catching the ball so that it does not slip out of the hands and into the net, why a goalkeeper needs to rely on their feet in order to get the rest of their body into the correct position, where to throw the ball after a save, and how to cover the most net so that there are no holes that the ball could fly into. The job of the goalkeeper can be a hard one. Players should be trained how to defend the goal since it is what stands between winning or losing the game.

One of the best techniques to learn when playing the position of goalkeeper is to learn how to watch a game and anticipate the other teams moves. While games are unpredictable, there are basic maneuvers that are used in every game. By observing how soccer is played and how the defending team is moving from the beginning of the game, a goalkeeper will know when they should be on guard and when to expect the ball. Knowing when to come off the line is another skill that needs to be addressed. Some players will spend all their time on the line while others will leave it and move around the front of the goal. Being able to gauge when to leave the line and when to defend it is done by practicing drills and playing out different scenarios. With hard work and honing in on observation skills, a person will become a better goalkeeper.
