Alvaro Mesen
Alvaro Mesen has been among the top three goalkeepers of Costa Rica for a fair amount of time. He wore the country’s colors for the first time in 1999 when Costa Rica took on Slovakia. Later, he was included in Costa Rica’s World Cup team in 2002 but did not get a chance to keep the goal. Alvaro also qualified for Costa Rica’s 2006 World Cup team.
Alvaro, who was born in 1972 , made his name with Club Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. Later, he moved to Club Sport Herediano in Costa Rica. Alvaro, however, has not been able to keep the number one goalkeeping spot in his country’s national team. He has invariably been a second or third choice goalkeeper though this six foot goalkeeper has won close to 40 international caps.
He is rated to be a good shot stopper, and is comfortable with high balls. His stints with his club Herediano have invariably come in for great praise. But somehow he has not been able to translate the same form for his national team.
Besides football, Alvaro is also interested in public issues. He was appointed a FIFA Football Ambassador in 2001 and supported the 2002 FIFA World Cup Global March against Child Labor campaign.
